Indoor Practice and Human Performance Center

Our Vision for Jackrabbit Athletics is to be a premier student-centered collegiate athletic program. We envision high-quality, modern practice and competition facilities to provide our more than 450 student-athletes the opportunity to compete and excel at the highest levels, both athletically and academically.

Leadership gifts totaling $18 million were announced in August as the university launched a fund-drive that would allow construction to begin by summer 2013. The project’s cost is estimated at $24 million to $28 million. Financial commitments are needed for the full project by the fall of 2012 in order for SDSU to seek authorization from the state Board of Regents.

The Indoor Practice Center is designed to accommodate outdoor sports programs and provide athletes a year-round training venue for all sports. Features will include an eight-lane, 300-meter track and a 100-yard synthetic field. Additional features will include an area for field events, long jump, triple jump and pole vault.

The Human Performance Center will feature state-of-the-art space for sports medicine and strength and conditioning. Planned program features include rehab space, a training room, weight room expansion, hydrotherapy, a football team room, offices and academic advising facilities.

The principles that have guided the development of this plan are: to optimize the quality of overall student-athlete experience; to provide student-athletes the best opportunity to become lifelong champions, to achieve academic success, and to compete and succeed at the conference and NCAA championship level.

The Indoor Practice and Human Performance Center will support and further the success of three interrelated communities:

  • Student-Athletes will receive support, opportunities, programming and resources to pursue their athletic dreams, to succeed academically and to prepare for their future.
  • The University, its students, faculty, staff and alumni, will be united through shared experiences and a collaborative environment of teamwork. As a focal point for school identity and spirit, SDSU Athletic Programs will promote school pride, fellowship and celebration.
  • Citizens of the State of South Dakota will experience a source of pride, entertainment and the economic benefits provided and developed by the Center and its opportunities for SDSU’s Athletic Programs and team affiliation.

The Center will strengthen campus relationships by expanding academic experiences and research in such areas as athletic training, physical therapy, nutrition and other health-related programs. Additionally, this will allow for future partnerships with academic programs and foster community relationships and the marketplace to provide those services.

Today, the framework is being put in place to ensure that the legacy of South Dakota State University continues to be successful. Because of this project and SDSU donors, our student-athletes receive support to not only leave a legacy of success during their college career but also as they become leaders in society.
