Architecture, Engineering and Mathematics Building

A replacement for Solberg Annex follows the addition and renovation of Crothers Hall, the reconstruction of the original Solberg Hall, and the construction of a new facility for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the plan to renew the campus of the College of Engineering.
The Architecture, Engineering and Mathematics Building will provide a suitable home for several of the most dynamic programs on campus:
- Center for Financial Analytics
- Center for Statistics and Biometrics
- Center for Computational Science
- Senior Design Lab for Mechanical Engineering
- Engineering Resource Center
One of a kind in South Dakota, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is within the College of Engineering. It serves as a crucial focal point for faculty and students to interact within and beyond the university community.
Both faculty and students engage in active interdisciplinary exchanges:
- Financial analytics faculty hold joint appointments with the Department of Economics
- Biometrics faculty hold joint appointments with the College of Ag/Bio and the Ag Experiment Station.
- Many departments offer minors that work well with a math major. Computer science, economics, modern languages, chemistry, physics, and physical education are common minors for math majors.
The department plays a crucial role in economic development for the State of South Dakota:
- Any business or organization handling large amounts of data needs mathematicians and statisticians to analyze and interpret that data
- In the region, data intensive sectors are finance, medical research, health care practice, industry and biotech.
- Currently, local industry supports faculty positions in both finance and biotech.
Undergraduate degrees in math are available either through the College of Engineering or the College of Arts and Sciences. Specializations are available in statistics and financial engineering as well as secondary level teaching. Advanced degrees include Masters in both Math and Statistics and a PhD in Computational Science and Statistics.
