Memorial and Honor Scholarships
After Howard Hesby (Animal Science, ’66) died in 2005, his wife Kay quickly decided to honor his memory by creating a scholarship, in Howard’s name, to benefit animal and range science students at SDSU. “He loved South Dakota State. It’s a great school,” says Kay (’65) who studied French and English at SDSU. Howard earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from Purdue and taught for many years at Texas A & M. Giving back to South Dakota State fit well into the Hesby’s philosophy. “I think when someone helps you, you have to turn around and help someone else”, adds Kay.
Individuals, corporations and organizations alike are invited to create scholarships, of any kind, at SDSU. Each donor decides how his scholarship will be titled. Some donors create scholarships in their own names, but many others choose to remember someone who has touched their lives by creating a memorial or honor scholarship. What better way to honor the memory of a loved one or pay tribute to a special person than to create a scholarship or a program in his or her name at SDSU?
Memorial or honor scholarships may be funded annually or through an endowment.
