Annual Scholarships

Annually funded awards allow a donor to finance a scholarship(s) through a once-a-year gift or on a payment schedule to fulfill their commitment.

Cheryl Biegler (’78 Child Development,’81 Masters Guidance & Counseling) was a member of the Pride of the Dakotas marching band and Jazz and Symphonic Bands during her time at SDSU. She established an annually funded scholarship to support a non-music major student who is a member of SDSU bands and pay tribute to her late mother.

Cheryl’s mother, Margaret, was an Aberdeen, SD native whose devotion to music began at a very young age as she hauled her accordion in a wagon across town for weekly lessons. By age 13, Margaret was playing in a band, “Rainbow Kiddies.” Cheryl said her mother’s greatest joys came from playing for dances from 1934-1958, attending city band concerts in Aberdeen and Cheryl’s SDSU concerts.

Margaret’s love for music continued to the end of her life. Cheryl’s greatest gift came to her Mom in January, when her 50-piece band performed a concert for her mother and the nursing home residents. Margaret showed incredible dignity throughout her struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease and cancer. Much of that strength came from music. Margaret died April 11, 2006 at age 85.

Annually funded awards permit the donor to finance the scholarship through annual or more frequent gifts. (For example, John and Mary Smith choose to establish a $1,000 scholarship in the name of John’s father, electing to fund it with semi-annual payments of $500). Hundreds of annual scholarships are awarded each year to SDSU students. They range from $250 to $1,000 or more. Funds for the scholarships are deposited with the SDSU Foundation, and the scholarships are administered according to the selection criteria the donor has established.
