Life Income Gifts

Life income gifts offer a variety of benefits for both the donor and South Dakota State.  Below you will see several options for life income gifts and a brief description of each.  If you are interested in finding out more or setting up a life income gift, contact Jeff Nelson at 888-747-7378.

Charitable Gift Annuities

Donors may make gifts to the South Dakota State University Foundation and receive a guaranteed income for life, and also provide a guaranteed income for a spouse, parent, brother, sister, or another person for his/her lifetime. The gift produces current income tax savings and a large portion of the guaranteed income is tax-free income. Current recommendations of the American Council on Gift Annuities will be followed in determining the annuity payment.

Deferred Payment Gift Annuities

Donors may make gifts to the South Dakota State University Foundation, receive a current income tax deduction, and receive a guaranteed life income to begin at some future date. Donors, therefore, may make a current gift, save income taxes, and also provide a guaranteed income for their retirement years.

Charitable Remainder Unitrusts

Donors may make gifts to the South Dakota State University Foundation in trust, and provide for the trustee to pay them a fixed percentage each year of the value of the trust assets for their lifetime. These gifts can provide current income tax savings, capital gains tax savings, and estate tax savings. Charitable remainder unitrusts enable donors who own highly appreciated, low-yield assets to make a gift and also increase their return for their lifetime. The Foundation will accept straight unitrusts and “net-income” unitrusts with and without income make-up provisions.

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts

Donors may make gifts to the South Dakota State University Foundation in trust and provide for the trustee to pay them a fixed amount each year for their lifetime or for a period of years. Charitable remainder annuity trusts enable donors who own appreciated low-yield assets to make a gift and increase their return for their lifetime.

Life Estate Contracts

Donors may make a gift of a personal residence or farm to the South Dakota State University Foundation, receive a current income tax-deduction, and retain the use of the property for their lifetime. Life tenants will have the option to later join with the Foundation in a sale to liquidate the life and remainder interests.

Charitable Lead Trusts

Donors may make gifts to the South Dakota State University Foundation in trust and provide that the trustee shall pay an income to South Dakota State University for a fixed period of years, and further provide that at the end of the period of years the trustee will transfer the property to children, grandchildren or other specified persons. These gifts produce gift and estate tax savings, and provide a way to make a gift while still preserving assets for the donor’s family and other heirs.
