Hobo Day Gallery

2012 will mark the 100th celebration of Hobo Day, SDSU’s greatest tradition. It will also be the 75th time the Hobo Day Parade is led by the historic Bummobile. In preparation the Hobo Day Committee is creating a gallery to display the Bummobile and other Hobo Day memorabilia in order to celebrate Hobo Day’s proud past and help ensure its bright future.

Project Need

The Hobo Day Gallery will provide a place to display the Bummobile and Hobo Day memorabilia and create a living gallery for students, faculty and alumni to reconnect and share the traditions of the past. In addition, the Gallery will serve as a reception space for alumni and a study lounge for students. The Hobo Day Gallery will be 1,500 square feet of new space located on the north side of the Student Union near the new north entrance connecting the Gallery to the emerging Jackrabbit Green, Briggs Library the new SDSU Wellness Center and HPER Center.

Benefits of the Project:

  • Create a living gallery of homecoming traditions through display and personal interaction, accessible to students, faculty, alumni and visitors any time the Student Union is open.
  • A public, safe and clean, year-round home for the newly restored Bummobile, ensuring the 1912 Model T will continue to serve as the most visible trademark of Hobo Day.
  • Utilize Hobo Day to strengthen the bond between SDSU, alumni and students
  • Raise the awareness level of our homecoming traditions for SDSU’s current students.

Support Needed

Private support of $230,000 is needed to complete the Hobo Day Gallery. The University is covering the construction costs of the Gallery, but the Hobo Day Committee needs to privately raise the funds for the furnishing including the display stand for the Bummobile, museum-quality displays for Hobo Day memorabilia, furnishings for the Gallery, and structural support and landscaping for the Weary Wil statue on the exterior of the Gallery.

Donations of $1,000 and greater will be memorialized on the Hobo Day Gallery donor wall at the entrance of the gallery.
