Honors College

There are advantages in attending a small liberal arts college, such as prestige and personal attention … and there are advantages to attending a large public university, such as a sprawling campus, a variety of majors, access to research, and an active student life.
The SDSU Honors College strives for both, creating an environment where talented, motivated students may combine the best of both ends of the spectrum into a world-class education—at no additional cost.
Honors offers small class settings taught by some of SDSU’s most outstanding faculty. Courses are stimulating, challenging, and fun. Students actively engage in writing, discussion, and in-depth exploration of subjects and topics that interest them.
This means that an education from the Honors College features both breadth and depth. Through Honors general education classes, colloquia, contracted honors courses, and independent study projects, Honors students receive a well-rounded education of the highest quality.
Combine these experiences with opportunities for research, leadership, travel, and service—along with our dynamic community of faculty and student scholars—to create a value-added education like no other.
Couple offers challenge to endow $4.5 million for Honors College
Longtime supporters of South Dakota State University have provided a $3 million challenge match that could create $4.5 million in endowments to support program development, faculty support and student excellence initiatives for the Honors College.
Van and Barb Fishback of Brookings are providing a 2-for-1 match for other private gifts leveraged by the university and the SDSU Foundation to endow programs within the Honors College. The $4.5 million endowment would provide $180,000 a year on an annual basis. That would more than double the amount now available for Honors College programming.
