Arts and Sciences

The future at South Dakota State University is dynamic and we are enthusiastic about the manner in which the College of Arts and Sciences is centrally positioned to impact all students. While we are proud of the 16 departments that comprise the College, we are even more proud of the impact our talented and dedicated faculty have on all graduates of SDSU. It is the unique nature of the College that every student who enrolls at State is eventually a student served by our College. While it is a significant responsibility to serve all students, we know that it is also a privilege.

Exciting Projects

  • Avera Health and Science Center — The 144,600-squarefoot home to the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemisty will serve more than 50 percent of SDSU students on campus and increase the university’s research capabilities in health sciences. The project requires $18.8 million in private gifts. The Avera Health and Science Center was formally dedicated on September 9, 2010.
  • Performing Arts Center, Phase II — An addition to the Performing Arts Center will become home to the Music Department, as well as a large 250-seat recital hall. The facility also will boast an 850-seat proscenium theater, capable of hosting the university’s major stage productions.
  • Yeager Hall Media Center — The estate of longtime benefactors Anson and Ada May Yeager provided the leadership gift to create a state-of-the-art media center to train students and serve as a primary production and communications facility for campus use.

Annual Support
The private support received from alumni and friends is what provides the excellence in what would otherwise be a quality education.  Donors to each of the 16 departments within the College of Arts and Sciences provide discretionary funds that allow the Dean and department heads to offer valuable travel opportunities, guest speakers, and specialized equipment for students and faculty that would otherwise be unavailable.  The annual support from friends and alumni like you is what permits us to raise the expectations of our students and faculty.

You may designate your support to any of the following departments in the College of Arts and Sciences… just be sure to add a note to your gift. Click here to give now.

Scholarships
An education from South Dakota State University is still remarkably affordable when compared nationally.  However, for many South Dakota students who may be first-generation college students, cost is still a barrier.  Attracting the top students in South Dakota and nationally is not often a problem. The challenge lies in successfully recruiting them and providing them with scholarships.  Sponsoring a scholarship is way to have a direct impact on a student. Options include:
