Cereal Bowl, barbecue slated for Sept. 18

Latest News No Comments

SDSU football fans should come hungry to the 15th annual South Dakota State University Cereal Bowl, set for Sept. 18.

Before the Jacks take the field at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, the Department of Plant Science will host a pre-game Cereal Bowl Barbecue from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Kickoff for the first home game of the season is at 6 p.m.

“The SDSU Cereal Bowl has been a tradition getting stronger for 15 years, and our department is excited to again welcome Jacks fans, our supporters and commodity groups, and the public to both the game and to our barbecue,” said Sue Blodgett, head of the Plant Science Department.

Tickets for the meal cost $7 and will be available at the barbecue, just south of the stadium. The meal will includes freshly roasted pork, all the trimmings, and corn on the cob. Proceeds from the barbecue will support undergraduate scholarships in the Department of Plant Science and Jackrabbit Athletics.

Other events coinciding with the Cereal Bowl include a Plant Science Alumni event prior to the barbeque and the dedication of the new Seed Technology Laboratory at the SDSU Innovation Campus.

Co-sponsors of the Cereal Bowl events are the Plant Science Department, Jackrabbit Athletics and the following commodity groups:

  • South Dakota Crop Improvement Association,
  • South Dakota Corn Council,
  • South Dakota Wheat Commission,
  • South Dakota Soybean Council, and
  • South Dakota Oilseeds Council.

Organizers initiated the Cereal Bowl to recognize the state’s commodity groups for their long and generous support of SDSU research and scholarship funding.

The Cereal Bowl is a good place to see the Jacks win – the team holds an 11-3 record in Cereal Bowls since the event began in 1996.

The Jacks face Illinois State in the football game at 6 p.m. In 2009, the Jacks played Illinois State on the road and returned to Brookings with a 38-17 victory.

To purchase advance tickets for the barbecue, call the Plant Science Department at 605-688-5123.

Game tickets are available by calling the Jackrabbit ticket office at 1-866-GO-JACKS (1-886-465-2257) or 605-688-5422 or by visiting www.gojacks.com.
