Submit ideas for SDSU’s ‘Name the Day’ Contest
South Dakota State University students, faculty, staff and friends of the University may take part in a naming contest for a new university initiative dedicated to promoting the traditions and spirit that recognize the collegiate experience by what people wear. The initiative’s purpose is to have everyone associated with South Dakota State wear apparel representing SDSU on each Friday during the academic year.
“We are looking for names that embrace the collegiate experience and embody South Dakota State University,” said Mike Lockrem, director of marketing and communications at SDSU. “It is an opportunity to build on the sense of solidarity that everyone connected to SDSU shares through the institution’s academic mission, intercollegiate athletics and overall importance to the state of South Dakota and the region.”
Potential names can be submitted through April 23, while an online vote will take place during finals week from May 3-7. The first official spirit awareness day will be scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3, and continue throughout the academic year. The individual whose name is selected via the voting process will be eligible to win a University VIP package sponsored by Jackrabbit Athletics, the University Bookstore and ARAMARK.
“This is a concept that is incorporated at other universities throughout the country with a high level of success,” Lockrem said. “Our intent is to target Fridays for our spirit awareness days, although it is important for people to understand Friday does not need to be included in the name.”
Name submissions must be sent by email to sdsu.ur@sdstate.edu with “Contest Submission” included in the subject line. A campus committee of faculty, staff and students will determine the top names for the online voting. Details will be coming soon on how to access the online voting.
