Reception to honor retiring SDSU journalism professors

Two retiring South Dakota State University Journalism and Mass Communication professors will be honored at a public reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, in Room T3 of the SDSU Foundation Building at 815 Medary Ave., Brookings.

Professor Jack Getz and Associate Professor Dennis Hinde will retire from the faculty of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in May.

A Sioux Falls native, Professor John E. (Jack) Getz joined the department in 1985 after a distinguished career as a reporter and editor for newspapers in South Dakota and North Dakota. A 1964 SDSU journalism graduate, Getz earned his M.A. in journalism from the University of Arizona in 1985 and his Ed.D. in educational administration from the University of South Dakota in 2001. At SDSU, Getz has taught journalistic writing, public affairs reporting, journalism history and many other courses. In addition, he served as coordinator of the department’s internship program for 20 years.

Dennis Hinde

Originally from Beloit, Wis., Associate Professor E. Dennis Hinde joined the SDSU faculty in 1995. Hinde earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University-Hayward, his M.A. in advertising from Texas Tech University in 1983, and his Ph.D. in advertising from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1999. At SDSU, Hinde has taught a variety of advertising courses, ranging from writing to law. Five times, he led teams of SDSU advertising students to regional competitions, placing in the top four, three times. For the past several years, Hinde has coordinated the department’s internship program.

The SDSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication includes more than 350 undergraduate and graduate students and 11 full-time faculty. Journalism and mass communication students at the undergraduate level may choose to specialize in advertising, broadcast journalism, news-editorial journalism or media production. Graduate students earn the M.S. in journalism attending classes in Brookings or through the department’s Online Master’s in Journalism program.
